I don’t care what Mum said. You’re no fun! ‘Ow’re we s’posed to make friends if we’re seen with you? Molly worried too much. Fred and George were going to be fine. More than fine, as long as they could ditch their fun crusher of a brother. You’ll both see soon that Hogwart’s isn’t about fun. It’s about studying hard and becoming skilled with magic of---- Yeaa, he kept going, but the twins were done listening. Instead, they looked at one another, nodded, and ran out of the car in opposite directions. Splitting up worked well, because a very annoyed Percy stuck his head out confused about which way he should go, rolled his eyes, and returned to the car realizing he wasn’t going to be able to get them back in there. He could use magic of course, but he saved that for emergencies (which he’d regret after Fred and George’s first magic lesson).
With no clue as to where George had run off to, Fred moved from car to car looking for one with room for him to sit. He’d settle for anyone, really, but it was hard to find empty seats when most of the students had friends to sit with. Needless to say the first years were grossly outnumbered by everyone else. Sure enough, though, Fred found a car with only one kid inside, and he looked young enough to be a first year, so that was perfect. He hopped in, took a second to catch his breath, shut the compartment door and sat down. Fred Weasley, nice to meet you, don’t open that door. I’m being chased by a monster who’d bore you to death in seconds.

Hogwarts.... Who would name a school Hogwarts? Lee guessed when you were cool enough to have your own magic school it didn't really matter how strange it was named, but he was still kind of curious about it. I mean, Hogwarts.. that just didn't sound inviting. Then again, on the tele, witches and wizards were always sort of uninviting.. all off on their own in the middle of some forest playing with eyeballs and rat tales.... He really, REALLY hoped that Hogwarts wasn't going to be full of people like that (although he'd been snooping around since he got to the train station, and so far, no eyeballs to be reported-- a very good sign). There were some people who looked a little weird, but for the most part, everyone seemed pretty much like him. The only difference, was that most of them knew what they were doing. Or at least, if they didn't- they were doing a VERY good job at pretending.
If there was somewhere specific he was supposed to be, Lee had no idea where it was. Maybe it was supposed to be obvious.. but it wasnt. He ended up trying out quite a few compartments with very different groups of people (experiences which were confusing him more if anything) before ultimately settling in an empty one, waiting around anxiously for something (anything something, really anything) to happen. Then someone else came in. Finally. (Yeah, I know, patience, yeup). That was awesome, fantastic, wait--what? Lee jumped up and ran to peek out the door, "Do you mean a real monster? ARE there real monsters? Or are you talking about one of those people with the funny badges- or the green ties. Whoa; I knew there was something wrong with them! That makes sense." He walked around the compartment a few times during his 'epiphany' before sitting next to the other boy again. "Hi. Lee Jordan."

This kid had to be a first year. That was good.. as long as he wasn’t a Slytherin. They’d have to wait to find out what Houses they were in, but if the guy figured out that there was something bad about those green ties then it was safe to assume he wasn’t going to become one. Fred hadn’t actually talked to a Slytherin, but he had heard enough about them at home. Anyway, they weren’t dealing with a Slytherin. It was just Percy.. but he was almost just as annoying. Fred laughed a little when the kid ran up to peek out the door at the “monster”. Pft, like monsters would be allowed on the train. He’s not really a monster.. he’s my brother. A monster would be more fun. The badges mean they’re prefects—none of them are any fun either. Percy’ll be one of them in a couple years.
It was amusing to talk to another first year who actually seemed new to the whole idea of Hogwart’s. Fred hadn’t been there, but he’d heard stories, seen pictures, and he knew a little about certain things, like the Houses. I’d stay away from the green ties too. They’re not monsters but I heard they’re no fun either. They don’t like anyone. While he gave his little explanation, the other boy, Lee, walked around and it didn’t take long for Fred to realize that he wasn’t the type to sit still. It wasn’t that hard to tell that Lee wasn’t familiar with the wizard world either. Hey Lee, haven’t you got siblings in school? Or is it just you? Just him? That would mean he was either the oldest or the only child, both of which were foreign ideas to Fred.

He’s not really a monster.. he’s my brother. "Oh... okay." Okay, that was good. Lee wasn't exactly sure how he felt about there being monsters on the train. And he still wasn't even sure if there were monsters on the train. (I mean- he'd know it if he saw it.. right?) He nodded a few times at Fred's various explanations. Well at least now he knew what a prefect was.. They didn't sound very fun. "Percy's... your brother?" That seemed like a good guess. It sort of sounded like a boring monster-brother name. "Why would he want to be a prefect if they're not fun?"
It really didn't seem like many things at Hogwarts were fun, the way the other first year was talking. Lee wondered how he already knew what everyone was like, but then he realized he had a brother who went to the school... That was so cool. "Okay. Okay so who IS fun?" Cause those are the people he wanted to be around.. assuming they existed. There were other tie colors- but Lee didn't really get what those meant. Fred seemed okay though. So at least that was one person. Then Fred asked if HE had any siblings in school. "This school..or any school? I have a sister.. well she's kind of my sister.. but she goes to a different school. So I guess it's just me... Do you have more siblings here?"

Brilliant—he’d made a mistake already. The fact that he was related to Percy was not something he needed other people to know. Then they’d start assuming that they were similar to each other and that would just be horrible. Even so, he nodded when Lee asked if Percy was his brother. Yup. He wants to be a prefect because he’s no fun. And it runs in the family.. but it won’t after him. No way I’ll be one of them. He shuddered at the thought of wearing a badge. Him.. disciplining people.. Ha.
When Lee asked the next question, Fred realized that he really hadn’t made Hogwart’s sound all that great. He’d mentioned prefects and Slytherins and…monsters. Those were the bad parts. Me! He responded with enthusiasm before thinking more about the question. Aaaand.. well.. I’m sure there are others. The Quidditch players are fun, I’ll bet. And.. and the Gryffindors. Not the prefects.. but the normal Gryffindors are fun..from what Bill said. Bill’s my brother. I’m gonna be a Gryffindor like him. Percy’s a Gryffindor too, but saying ‘like Bill’ sounds better.
What the kid said next was sort of confusing. He had a sister..and she didn’t go to Hogwart’s? That made zero sense. You’ve got a sister who isn’t a wizard? He’d known it was possible, but he didn’t realize how common it was. Maybe that was why Lee didn’t seem to know much about the school. What about your parents? Can they do magic? Have they showed you anything? He pulled out his wand and played with the tip of it with his fingers. He knew better than to do so because making a hole in the train ceiling would annoy his mother when she found out, so he was sure to be mindful of where he pointed. He nodded again at the next question. I’ve got Percy, and then there’s George. He’s my age. Bill and Charlie used to go here, but they graduated a while ago. They’re more fun than Percy though. We’re not all boring like him. Charlie’s studying dragons. [/size]

The more Fred spoke the more Lee... had no idea what he was talking about. Usually he was pretty inquisitive, but right now, just nodding along seemed like a good idea. He was pretty sure if the kid in front of him decided that he wanted to go to the moon one day he was actually going to go through with the plan- so if he didn't want to be a perfect, he wasn't going to be one. (Lee, on the other hand, changed his mind every five seconds, and besides that, he still couldn't explain what a prefect actually was if someone else asked.. good thing nobody was asking him anything).
"What's Quiddich? Is it like.. a game, or like..?" Well he'd sort of answered his own question. What else did you play? "And Gryffin..dor- bloody hell, who came up with the names for these things?" It was like a Dr. Seuss book on steriods. "I'm gonna be a Gryffindor too!" Mhm, and said with a whole lot of confidence (even though, in his head, he was wondering exactly what the hell a Gryffindor was). He figured whatever it was, he did want to be one though, because Fred wanted to be one, and Fred seemed to have some pretty good ideas on what to be and not to be (That is the question!)
"Yeah..." His sister went to the school that he used to go to. He didn't see where Fred was going with this until he started shooting out more questions, which of course, Lee was happy to answer because he was happy to be having a conversation in general (although, it didn't seem like his home life was half as interesting as the other boys). "They can't do magic either. Why, can yours?" Okay, so he answered a question with a question. I did say he asked a lot of those. He'd seen families of wizards at Diagon Alley, so he knew they existed, but he didn't know if there were a lot of them or not, or.. or anything really. Everything he asked the answer was either "you'll learn at Hogwarts" or it made no sense at all. "Wow.. you.. have a lot of brothers. And- dragons?.. Dragons? Like, with the scales and the breathing fire the the.... whoa."

Man, they really knew nothing about each other. It seemed like they had absolutely nothing in common and Fred was beginning to wonder if nonmagical people had ever even seen birds, or if those were solely for the magical world as well. Growing up the way he did, it wasn’t that obvious which birds were only seen by him because he was a wizard. The more he thought about it, the more he started thinking about birds he knew of. He figured that birds like a phoenix were specific to the magical world because it didn’t seem normal for things to explode spontaneously like they did. He’d never seen the boring-looking birds explode.. so it must have been a magic thing. It just wasn’t easy to tell for everything, because for Fred and George, explosions happened about once a week (this would ironically increase to a few times a day after the twins gained experience and curiosity with magic). Even though distinguishing between the two worlds could be confusing, Fred figured that if he was going to hang out with Lee, he’d start to learn more and more pretty soon.
He was sure Lee wanted to know more too, so he was more than happy to answer the boy’s questions (Not to mention he found Lee to be the most interesting person EVER and he knew that he’d have questions for Lee as well). Quidditch is wicked! It’s the sport for wizards. It’s got a keeper who blocks the quaffles that the chasers toss around and the seekers go after the snitch and the beaters hit bludgers at the chasers from the other team. He chuckled a little, realizing that he wasn’t the best person to give a helpful explanation. Well, you’ll see! It’s brilliant. George and I want to be beaters. It’s the best job since we’d get to knock bludgers at people. He laughed when Lee complained about the House names. The Houses have got odd names.. Dad says they were named by some famous people. They’re probably dead now. Being a Gryffindor was one of Fred’s greatest desires. After all he’d heard from Bill and Charlie, it’d be awful to end up in a different House, and to break the family chain. If we’re both in Gryffindor, we can make faces at Slytherins together and we can use magic on them and it’ll be great! I mean.. I don’t think we’re supposed to use magic like that but it’s so much fun.. and it’ll be even better once we learn spells.
Yeah… Wow! She must think you’re so cool! It sounded pretty cool to Fred. Magic didn’t impress anyone in his family. More times than not, it actually just aggravated his mother because of the way they liked to use magic in the Burrow. They can’t do magic either. Why, can yours? Both my mum and dad can. They went to Hogwart’s when they were younger. We all do magic in our house.. well.. most of us can. Perce, Bill, and Charlie get to have all the fun because they already know what they’re doing. George and I sort of make holes in stuff a lot. It gets Mum all peeved. And getting in trouble with George is pointless because I can’t even tell ‘er I’m George if she’s mad at both of us. He’d had a crazy home life, to say the least. That’s awesome that you’re the only magic one in your house! But if you’ve had no magic, what do you do for fun? He couldn’t think of anything entertaining that he and George had done that didn’t involve magic in some way, whether it was practicing Quidditch in the backyard, messing with potion ingredients they stole from the kitchen or simply playing around with wands they’d stolen from their older brothers.
Wow.. you.. have a lot of brothers. The funny thing was.. he’d only told Lee about four of his siblings. He laughed at Lee’s comment, nodding. I’ve also got a younger brother and a younger sister. Ron won’t start Hogwart’s until we’re third years and Gin won’t start until our fourth. Yea, he had a lot of siblings. That was something he was actually used to hearing. He continued to be amused when Lee didn’t know about dragons. Yea, dragons.. Note to self—dragons are the magical type of birds. Like, with the scales and the breathing fire.. Yea, those are the ones! Not all of them breathe fire but most of them do. Some are really big and scary. Charlie’s in Romania studying them—he’s like a genius when it comes to them.

For every question Lee had answered, he thought of at least three more he wanted to ask. It was kind of like when you went to look up a word you don't know in the dictionary, and when you're reading the definition for the word you don't know, you come across another word you don't know, and so you need to look up that word, but then that words has a synonym that you recognize, so you try to apply that word to the definition to the original word- and it's all so confusing that you decide to give up because you already KNOW how to speak English and whoever made up these words was CLEARLY just trying to show off. So yeah (on topic now) in Fred's whole entire Quidditch explanation the only words Lee got were basically "the", "after", and "other". It doesn't really matter how many times you flip them around, the picture they paint is far from a Picasso (actually, Picasso was the one who put the eyes under the nose and the mouth upside down, so maybe the problem was that it was a little TOO Picasso)
"Wizards have only got one sport? It doesn't get boring? What if you're not good at it?" Obviously there were less wizards than non-wizards (okay, so it wasn't obvious. nothing was obvious. Lee was assuming there were less wizards than non-wizards) but Lee still couldn't imagine there ever being just one sport (..granted, Fred's explanation made it sound like there were at least three completely different games going on at the same time in the same place, which was really making the game sound kind of intimidating). In the normal-- he didn't really want to say that he was normal and they weren't, but for lack of better words and even even longer post-- in the normal word there were lots of sports that everybody knew, and then there were even more that were completely obscure. And then when they did all of them at one time it was a super big deal and took like.. a week. "I'd want to be... a seeker... I guess." It sounded like the simplest of the tasks. Chase a snich. Yeah, he could do that.
Nodding, again. Okay, named after famous dead people. He could get that. They did that too. Then Fred started to tell him all the things they could do if they both were in the Gryffidnor.. thing. "That sounds fun!" He guessed he could get over the names... once he knew what they actually were for and where he actually wanted to be and where he actually was going to be. It just clicked with him that Fred said 'if'. "Wait.. So.. do we get to pick.. like if we want to be in Slytherin or Gryffindor? We get to pick, right?" Of course they did. Anything else would be stupid. He didn't want to be a Slytherin.
'Wow! She must think you’re so cool!' He laughed. "Kinda.. She mostly just thinks I know some cool tricks. I'm hoping that it'll be a little more impressive once I can actually do real magic, yanno. Because I mean, how cool would that be? Now.. everyone just thinks its weird. And, I mean, I still think it's kinda weird. I just want to- are we there yet?" Right, okay, in the middle of a discussion. He stared at Fred in amazement as he explained that everyone in his house did magic, and it was totally normal for him and his brother to blow stuff up. "Thats so cool." He really didn't think it was all that cool that he was the only one who could do magic in his house. But he could see why Fred might, a little. He guessed when you had a bunch of people who could do magic, there really wasn't any reason t o do do everything with magic. But then.. Lee couldn't really imagine doing ANYTHING in his house with magic. "We do lots of stuff... I dont know. We play other games and sports and we watch cartoons and we can blow stuff up too!" He was pretty proud of that. (Mentosanddietcoke). "It doesn't sound that awesome but it..is. I think it'd be even cooler if you had lots of people to do things with all the time." Seriously, coming from it just being him and his dad for like forever, the idea of having like..eight underage people running around in one house was fantastic. You could play...like anything, any time. And Lee figured it would be kinda like that living in school. Goodbye rules and regulations. (I mean, they'd be there but.. well, that doesn't mean much)
"Whoa." Yeah, okay, that was his word of the day and it was going to get worse once they actually got to Hogwarts. "That's got to be the most amazing job ever! He gets to see them? Like all the time? Have you ever seen one? Are there any in Britain?" Unlike wizards and Quidditch, dragons were something that the picture in Lee's head actually matched up to the real deal, so of course- it was super exciting. Not that.. yanno..anything they were talking about hadnt been super exciting.

Fred chuckled as Lee asked about Quidditch being the only sport. When you really think about it, it did seem strange to only have one sport, but Fred didn’t know of any other sports, and Quidditch seemed to have a large enough following, so it wasn’t like people ever got bored of it. There was enough going on during a game to hold attention. Do.. muggles have more than one sport? I mean.. everyone loves Quidditch! Even if you don’t play.. it’s great fun to watch. There’s so much going on.. it’s exciting! When Lee mentioned being a seeker, Fred’s eyes widened. Whoa! That’d be brilliant. Everyone loves the seeker. If you catch the snitch, you win the game! To Fred, Quidditch was the most exciting thing in the world.
That sounds fun! It was awesome to know that Lee would be willing to break the rules to have a little fun. That meant that they could definitely be friends if they were going to get enjoyment out of the same activities. Unfortunately, they might not get as many opportunities if they weren’t in the same House. The twin shook his head. You don’t pick—the Sorting Hat does. You get sorted depending on what kind of person you are. Except.. I don’t really get it.. because Percy got put in the same House as Bill and Charlie.. but I guess it knows what it’s doing. Fred wasn’t really worried about being put into Slytherin, because he knew that by not wanting to be like them, he probably wasn’t.
Fred laughed. The train ride is really long. They’ll start telling us to put our robes on once we get close. He couldn’t wait to start learning magic..to start controlling it. It’s really wicked, real magic. You can do anything with it. The spells can be hard to say though. When Percy says them, they sound all fancy and long..but that’s probably because it’s Percy. You’ll really impress her after no time! Even though you’ve got to be careful.. since magic isn’t allowed outside school when you’re under seventeen. That rule did always seem annoying, but it wasn’t heavily enforced in the Burrow. Then again.. the rule was to keep muggles from seeing anything. Muggles didn’t get anywhere near the Weasley home, so they could pretty much do whatever they wanted as long as it didn’t attract too much attention by like.. blowing up a muggle town or something.
It must have been cool growing up in a house with magic, but it wasn’t like Fred knew enough to know the difference. It sounds really awesome, Fred corrected with a laugh. That all sounded so cool! Well—the parts he knew about sounded cool.. like games and blowing stuff up. And he was sure the sports must have been cool even though he couldn’t name one. Cartoons? He asked with confusion before chuckling again. Blowing stuff up is really fun. Yea.. people make stuff fun.. but sometimes a whole lot of them can get annoying. You can’t get away from them. For the most part, it was everyone else trying to get away from Fred and George.. yanno..for the concern for their well-being.. but sometimes if Fred and George wanted to mess with stuff alone, they had to go a little ways from the house. Of course, whenever Fred thought of being alone, it was with George—never truly by himself.
I think it’s an amazing job too! He sees them every day, for the most part. I’ve seen one once.. it was a baby one that Charlie brought back to the house for a little while. Mum had a fit and told him to get it out before it started setting stuff on fire. They live all over the world, mostly in the mountains in places where muggles don’t usually go. Fred really wanted to see a real dragon, one that was huge and dangerous, but he’d only seen pictures—mostly ones that Charlie had sent back. It wasn’t exactly easy to get very close to a full-grown one.

As much as the wizarding world had monsters and dragons, talking hats, and sports where people flew around on brooms, Lee really thought there would have been a faster way to get to Hogwarts than by train. Finally they arrived, changed into robes (which really made everyone look funny) and... got on a boat because they weren't actually there yet. Lee met Fred's twin brother and the monster Percy before they were led into a HUGE room, and sorted by the talking hat (who by the way, seemed to think it was very funny that he had so many questions about the talking -and mind reading, nobody told him about the mind reading!- hat). He was sorted into Gryffindor and after all the people between J and W, so were the twins.
Now, they were being led to their common room. It just so happened they were near the back of the group, which wasn't so bad, because it made it harder to hear the monster Percy talking about... well, they weren't listening, so they didn't know, but it probably wasn't anything important. Lee was having a hard time staying with the group from the start, because there was just so much else going on to get distracted by. It seemed like everything in the whole school either moved or talked or did both at the same time. First there was the ghosts and then- yeah, It was crazy. "Whoa.. Fred," he grabbed his sleeve and pulled him down the hallway they were passing by, pointing "That picture just moved!" And, apparently, that picture didn't appreciate being pointed at, and felt the need to say it. With words. That came out of its mouth. "And talked. That picture just talked!" He turned around to look at it. "You can't do that!" And..now he was talking a picture. And it was answering. He looked back at Fred (because he'd rather talk to Fred than a picture). "It can do that. How's it doing that?"

Fred didn’t think Percy was ever going to stop talking. Maybe it was because it was his brother—nah.. it was because it was Percy. He’d already heard all that stuff anyway from his older brothers.. stuff about rules and the common room and their classes. He was probably also talking about how to find stuff, but Fred would figure that out later after getting lost a billion times, so listening to the directions the first time was pointless. Everything was so big and nothing like he’d pictured in his head and it was nearly impossible not to be distracted by it all. He didn’t need to pay attention to anything once they were sorted. Lee was in Gryffindor which just proved that he was awesome and that the two were going to get along. Fred walked alongside George and his new friend in the back of the group before being pulled into another hallway. Knowing George would cover, he followed Lee with curiosity. What.. what is it??
At first, he thought Lee was joking. He laughed and waited for Lee to tell him what was so exciting.. but that didn’t happen. Instead, the picture got all sassy at Lee and Fred realized that he was serious. He knew that the muggle world was boring..but really? Apparently there was a lot that Fred took for granted. It can do that. How’s it doing that? Yea, yours can’t? He turned to the picture with a quick explanation that Lee was Muggleborn before turning to him with a grin. Well, you’ve gotten us away from the monster.. and I don’t really want to go back.

Yea, yours can’t? "No!" Okay, so Lee felt a little bit let down that Fred wasn't as excited as he was about the talking picture... but you couldn't really blame him. For a first day of school, things were going amazingly well, and the school ended up even more awesome than he expected. It was just that he wanted to see all the cool things now, and Percy was going on about nothing for far too long. Still, he really hadn't meant to separate them from the group. He peeked around the corner to see how far away they'd gotten only to see that the hallway was completely empty.
Uh-oh. That was bad. At least, that was bad until Fred made a joke about the subject. Now that he thought about it, being away from the monster Percy and the rest of the first years wasn't so bad at all. Actually, it could be a very good thing. "Yeah, me either. Meant to do that.." He nodded confirmatively (I'm aware that's not a word. Shush). I mean, the castle couldn't have been that big, right? They'd find their way back eventually. "We could probably give ourselves a better tour, don'tcha think?" He grinned at his friend and looked down the hallway with the pictures again. To the portrait he'd been interrogating before he added "Oh, you didn't hear that either." and made the shush sign to his mouth. Day one, annoy the talking portrait. Check. "This way?"
