Luna loved the summer flowers. Playing in the field was one of her favourite pastimes. She liked to explore and look for different things, things other people might not notice or bother to look at or look for. It was what made things so interesting- to see them in a different light was refreshing.
It was a sunny summer day, not a cloud in the sky. Eight-year-old Luna Lovegood found herself skipping through the tall grass of the field next to her house without a care in the world. Her parents were both inside working on a new issue of the Quibbler, and she had decided to go play outside while looking for something- anything- new and interesting to feature in the issue.
Luna's long, straggly blonde hair reached to about the middle of her back, and it was in a long, loose braid. She was going to keep growing it out, she loved it long. It was rather whimsy, and very cheerful in her opinion- she liked it a lot.
She wasn't really paying attention to where she was going in the field, particularly- she always found her way home in the end. She could still see the light outline of her home behind her as she skipped, watching it fade away in the distance over her shoulder. Today was a good day for exploring and learning new things. Perhaps even for meeting new people. Luna didn't really live near anyone as far as she knew, or at least, no one came by her home very often. She didn't have any friends other than her parents. But she was okay with that, because she loved them. Her parents were very extraordinary. She wanted to be just like them someday. notes: I realized as I wrote this that since it's pre-Hogwarts her mum would still be alive :'D Cause Luna's mum didn't die till she was nine and i wanted to not have this when she was nine or ten because it was so soon after... let me know if anything needs to be fixed x3

If you go out and de-gnome the garden for me, I'll tell mum that Ron broke the vase and not you! What a deal! Ginny had been running around the house, chasing after George, when she had bumped into a table, knocking down the pricey vase upon it and shattering it. "But George, I can't do that myself!" De-gnoming the garden was tough work; it was something her and two of her brother would have to do all together, not something she could just do alone. George had been assigned to the de-gnoming this day and found a clever way to get out of it. Well, if you want mum mad at you... "Fine, I'll do it!" An eight year old Ginny huffed as she crossed her arms over her chest.
Mum was out doing chores and would expect it to be done when she got home. That meant Ginny had to get cracking on it and finish it before Mum found out she was doing it and not George and that something was wrong here. Ginny stomped outside in her nice little dress and hair bow to go do the dirty work. Boy, George was too clever for her! He could have set her up to break the vase for all she knew! "George is such a jerk." she spoke to herself as she looked for the gnomes. This lasted all of two seconds, however.
It was a beautiful day. One of those beautiful days that one could not ignore. The field beyond the garden was full of tall, flowing grass and wild flowers. The whole seen was gorgeous and irresistible to Ginny, despite her having a task in front of her. Mum's going to find out anyway! Ginny stomped off out of the garden. And this way George will be in trouble too! She figured all would still be right with the world if she stomped off and didn't do this task for a conniving eleven year old George.
Ginny's hair was long and red, for her mum had refused to cut it just yet. In fact, it had not been cut since she was born, so it was a bit straggly towards the ends. It blew in the breeze as she merrily skipped along the fields, the grass so high and she so small that she could not see over many of them. She was only about three feet, five inches tall for goodness sakes! The little girl could get so lost so easily, being alone in the field, or so she thought.
She ran through the fields, arms out, laughing and just simply enjoying life. Suddenly, she bumped into something--someone and went falling to the ground. What she saw was indeed a who, not a what. A girl about the same age as her, with long blonde hair and blue-grey eyes, that she had never seen before was there with her. "I'm sorry!" she said quickly. "What's your name?" she asked, her curiosity butting into the situation.

Honestly it had been Luna's fault that she hadn't been paying attention to where she was going. The young girl had been too caught up in thinking about things to look at in the grass and different ways to explore. She hadn't thought that there might be other people out in the field. Though now that she thought of it, it made sense that they would be! It was such a nice day outside after all. What Luna hadn't expected was for a girl around her own age- perhaps the same age?- to bump into her in the flowers. As she tumbled to the ground, she looked up to see a girl with fiery red hair (it was quite long, Luna noticed and appreciated) speaking to her.
Luna was quite comfortable in the grass, just sitting there looking at all the shorter pieces and little wildflowers, and didn't care much about standing up at the moment. Instead, she still sat dreamily in almost the same position she'd been in when she fell, and smiled slightly when the girl apologized to her for knocking her over. "Oh, that's all right." she said cheerfully, as if it were the least thing she could possibly worry about- which was true, because it wasn't worrisome or bothersome at all to her- and then answered the question that followed. "I'm Luna Lovegood." she said, answering the question only for a few minutes, not bothering to return it. Finally, as if just realizing that it was the proper thing to do, she inquired,
"Who are you?"
One really couldn't blame her for not asking it sooner. She wasn't used to meeting new people by bumping into them in a field. It was an altogether strange predicament, but she didn't mind it. Perhaps she would make friends with this girl.

Ginny brushed back the hair that had fallen into her face and looked more closely at the girl she had ran into. She was very close in age, if not the same age, as Ginny. She had long, straggly light blonde hair, much like Ginny's except for the color. The girl had a dreamy look on her face that suggested she was a bit different from other eight year olds. Ginny made no notion to get up like the other girl, figuring she didn't want to be standing if the blonde girl wasn't.
Luna! What a peculiar name that was! It seemed like a name from one of her fairy tales, not for a real-live girl. "Ooo, pretty." Ginny wished she had a neat, unique name like that. Instead she was stuck with Ginevra, which was unique, but not in the way that she would like. Ginevra was weird; Luna was cool. "My name's Ginny Weasley! I live over there!" she said, pointing to the direction where she had came from. "Do you live around here? I've never seen you before. I've never seen anyone my age around here!" The Weasleys lived practically in the middle of nowhere. Ginny didn't think there were houses around, but of course she had never been allowed to venture out alone before.
"Do you want to play with me?" Ginny asked Luna. It wasn't often she had a female companion, especially one her age. She was hoping the girl didn't say no. She finally decided to stand up after a few minutes, then reached out her hand to Luna, who was still on the ground. Finding Luna was like a whole new adventure. The two knew nothing about each other, and with this great day outside, they would have an interesting day ahead of them.
"So are you a witch? How old are you? Do you have siblings? Where do you live? How long have you lived here?" she shot off question after question without a single breath, then finally took a huge breath once she was finished. Ginny was super excited for finding this new girl.

Luna smiled as the girl- Ginny, she introduced herself as- spoke. "Thank you, I like it very much." she said when Ginny complimented it. "It's nice to meet you, Ginny Weasley. I like your name, too." she said happily. This girl was so friendly, it was very refreshing. Perhaps she would like to go nargle-hunting with her or something similar. That would be fun. Luna nodded a bit when Ginny asked if she lived around here and then mentioned not seeing her before or anyone her own age. It was much the same with Luna, ironically. This could only turn out well, she thought.
Perhaps this would be her first friend. How very exciting! This thought was only brightened when Ginny asked her if she wanted to play with her. "Oh yes, I'd like that." she said happily, accepting Ginny's hand and standing up, her other hand all full with flowers she had picked whilst sitting on the ground. She began thinking of all the games she liked to play- nargle hunting, find the wrackspurt, gnome circle, faerie ring... there were so many fun games! She wondered if Ginny liked to play them too.
As Ginny spoke again, very quickly throwing out questions at Luna, the blonde looked dreamily down at the flowers in her hand and began weaving them together into a sort of crown. She was listening of course, even if it didn't exactly look like it. Finally when Ginny stopped talking in order to take a breath- it was interesting to see how much she'd been able to say without the need to breathe- Luna proceeded to answer her questions in order as she finished making the crown, saying everything very simply and matter-of-factly.
"Yes, I believe so; eight; no; over there on the other side of the field; all my life." she said, pausing just a bit between each word. She wasn't sure she could do it all so breathlessly like Ginny had. She made sure to gesture in the direction of her home, too, when she spoke of it. She then paused for a few more seconds, and then returned two of the questions. "Are you eight as well? Do you have many siblings?" she supposed that Ginny did look about eight and that since she asked about siblings, she must have had at least one. Otherwise it wasn't a very common question for those who didn't have siblings, she thought. She didn't ask any other questions, or return them rather- there was no need. Ginny had already told her where she lived, and from the way she spoke, Luna was able to deduce that Ginny had lived there a long time too. By asking Luna if she was a witch, it was obvious that Ginny must be one unless she was a squib. It was fairly simple deduction, really, and it saved many words.
